Local SEO in Chiswick

On a high street this dense, being nearby stops being an advantage. When every competitor is equally close to the searcher, the tiebreak is everything else.

Chiswick has an unusual local search problem. Google weighs how far each business is from the person searching, and on and around Chiswick High Road your competitors are often a two-minute walk away. Distance, the factor that decides most local results elsewhere, barely separates you here.

That changes what the work has to do. I am a digital marketing consultant based in West London with over 10 years of experience, and in Chiswick almost all of the leverage sits in the two factors that are not geography.

What decides it when proximity does not

Reviews, at volume and answered

Google says prominence is influenced by your review count and score, and in a dense high street that becomes the visible difference between two otherwise identical businesses. A profile with sixty reviews will beat one with four, and the customer scrolling past can see it too.

What matters is collecting them properly. Google prohibits incentivising reviews, discouraging negative ones, and pressuring people to leave one while they are on your premises, and it removes reviews it decides were bought. Ask everyone, at the point they are happiest, with a direct link, and reply to all of them including the difficult ones.

If you are a therapist or work in healthcare, your professional body adds a further layer, which I have set out in testimonials and reviews for therapists.

Category precision

Chiswick is thick with businesses that overlap: clinics, salons, studios, restaurants, and professional services all sitting in adjacent Google categories. Your primary category is the strongest relevance signal you have, and picking a broad one to seem bigger usually costs you the searches you actually want.

Pick the category that matches what you sell most of, then fill every secondary slot, because they are free and they widen the range of searches you can appear for.

A website that carries the listing

Prominence is also influenced by links to your site, and this is where most Chiswick businesses lose. A busy shop or practice with a thin three-page website has very little for Google to be impressed by, however good the business is in person.

A real page for each service, the areas you serve mentioned in ordinary sentences, and fast loading on a phone will do more here than any amount of fiddling with the listing itself. If your listing has disappeared altogether, these six causes are where I would start.

It decides whether AI recommends you too

When someone asks ChatGPT or Google’s AI results for a recommendation in Chiswick, the answer is drawn from real websites with clear, well-structured content. The signals that win a crowded map pack are largely the same ones that get you named in an AI answer, which I have written about in my guide to SEO for AI search.

Frequently asked questions

My competitor is two doors down and outranks me. Why?

Because distance is not separating you, so Google falls back on relevance and prominence. Usually it is their review count, their categories, or their website doing the work.

There is no threshold, and anyone quoting one is guessing. What matters is being credible against the businesses you are competing with, so look at what the three in the map pack have and work from there.

Only if it breaches Google’s content policies, for example by publishing someone’s personal or medical information. A negative review that does not breach policy stays, and a calm public reply does you more good than the review does harm.

Yes. The mechanics are the same, though the balance shifts: hospitality and retail lean harder on reviews and photos, professional services lean harder on the website.

Yes, across Ealing, Acton, Hammersmith, Brentford, and the surrounding boroughs.
