SEO for Therapists Presentation - SEO for Counsellors

Local SEO for Therapists: Become the First Choice in Your Area

1. Why this matters more than ever

More than one‑third (35 %) of UK adults have already worked with a counsellor or psychotherapist, and almost a third searched for support in the last 12 months. Those searches still start on Google, which holds just under 90 % of the UK search market. If your practice isn’t visible there, potential clients may never discover the life‑changing help you offer.

2. How would‑be clients actually search?

  • Symptom‑first – “help with panic attacks at night”.
  • Modality‑first – “EMDR therapist online”.
  • Location‑first – “CBT counselling in Bristol”.

Understanding which bucket most of your enquiries fall into shapes everything that follows.

3. Define your niche & keywords (start with humans)

Before opening a keyword tool, jot down:

  • 2–3 core services (e.g. trauma‑focused CBT, couples therapy).
  • Typical demographics (e.g. first‑time therapy seekers in their thirties).
  • Everyday language your clients use in session notes or emails.

Next, test those phrases in Google’s “autocomplete” and “people also ask” boxes to spot real‑world variations.

Choose one primary keyword per page plus 2–3 closely related phrases; sprinkle them naturally into headings and body copy—no awkward keyword‑stuffing.

4. Optimise each page for people and Google

Title tag – Lead with the primary keyword, add a benefit (≤ 60 characters).

H1 – Echo the title in plain English.

First paragraph – Answer the “am I in the right place?” question in ±40 words.

Meta description – Summarise outcome + CTA; Google may bold searched terms (≤ 155 characters).

Image ALT text – Describe the scene first, keyword second.

Internal links – Point to your intake form and at least one related blog post.

Pro tip: create a short FAQ accordion at the foot of every service page. Well‑structured answers often win Google’s “answer box”, leap‑frogging you over longer‑established rivals.

5. Local signals that move the phone (and diary)

  1. Google Business Profile (GBP) – claim, verify and complete every field, including “online appointments available”. Update weekly with micro‑posts.
  2. Consistent N‑A‑P – make sure your Name, Address and Phone appear identically on your website footer, GBP, Counselling Directory and BACP listing.
  3. Local citations – parish magazine websites, community mental‑health hubs and local press are low‑competition gems.
  4. Reviews – ask every discharged client to leave a sentence about why they chose you; 5–10 thoughtful reviews can nudge you into the coveted local map results.

6. Content that builds trust (E‑E‑A‑T minus the jargon)

Google now looks for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trust. Show these by:

  • Flagship guides – 1,500‑word deep dives.
  • Supportive blog posts – answer one narrowly‑scoped question (≈600 words) and link back to the flagship page.
  • Case studies – anonymised stories demonstrating outcomes.
  • Author boxes – a 60‑word bio with your accreditations and a friendly headshot on every article.

7. Authority‑building beyond your own site

  • Guest articles & podcasts – target allied professionals whose audiences overlap yours.
  • Professional directories – BACP, Psychology Today and WellDoing all provide a follow link back to your site.
  • Local press – journalists regularly need mental‑health commentary; set up a “therapist‑expert” profile on Help A Reporter Out.

One quality backlink from a trusted domain usually outweighs a dozen low‑grade links.

8. How to know it’s working

Google Search Console – Queries, average position, click‑through rate (Monthly).

Google Analytics 4 – Page views → enquiry‑form starts (Quarterly).

GBP Insights – Calls, website visits, directions (Monthly).

If a page sits on position 11–20 for a keyword, add internal links using that phrase as the anchor.

9. Therapist victories powered by SEO

“Theo is creative, has great ideas and executes plans that get results. Thoroughly recommended.” – Lenka Hanzelova, Therapies & Coaching.

“My site is live and I’m receiving many more client enquiries. I recommend Theo’s services unreservedly.” – Christabel W., Psychotherapist.

Real‑world proof that the approach above converts clicks into booked sessions.
