How Can I Rank My Website on ChatGPT?

What is 'Ranking' on ChatGPT?

You might not be aware of a new form of searching. Beyond using tools like Google and Bing, many business owners are now using ChatGPT to recommend businesses and services.

So, how does it work? When you first ask ChatGPT to recommend you someone, it’ll first ask for a bit more detail in order to provide the best responses. This is what we got:

This begins to unravel what you’re looking for in this business but doesn’t give you the direct options. For that you’ve got to use a bit more detail in your initial search to see what ranks highly on ChatGPT. So, we tried a more specific search that would pull out some options for us:

Here you can see it’s actually pulling out businesses from the web and recommending them to you. These companies are ranking highly on ChatGPT. Each business will rank within ChatGPT and you will find that using specific key words ensures your business shows up:

What methods can you use to rank higher on ChatGPT?

There are a few key things that ChatGPT uses when it searches the web to make decisions on what content and brands to rank highly:

  • Brand Mentions – These are the times that people mention your brand across the web. This can be on social media, blogs, other websites or more. In essence, the more people talk about you the higher you’re going to rank.
  • Reviews – This one might be the most obvious, a good review will help you rank higher. It’s never been more important to reach out for those reviews to help your brand grow, build trust and now to rank higher on ChatGPT.
  • Relevancy – This is where your keywords come into play. ChatGPT is more likely to rank you higher if your site contains relevant keywords and phrases linked to the search. So, ensuring your SEO is regularly updated can keep you relevant in ranking highly.
  • Age – It has been found that older products and services are recommended more when ChatGPT is ranking websites. This could be because those that are on for longer have more of a precedence and reliability.
  • Recommendations – Being backlinked on other websites, similarly to helping your Google ranking, helps your ChatGPT ranking too. Making sure you’ve got solid recommendations from reputable sites increases your chances of ranking higher.
  • Authority – This is looking at your social media following, your domain authority and what type of sites are linking to you. The more authority you hold in an online space the higher you will rank.

How does ChatGPT choose which websites to mention?

When ChatGPT browses the web to answer a question, it pulls from search results and reads the pages that answer the question most clearly. That favours pages with a direct answer near the top, clear headings, and short paragraphs it can quote. Sites that get mentioned consistently also tend to be named elsewhere: directories, press coverage, and other websites that establish the business as real and trusted.

In other words, the same things that earn you a Google featured snippet earn you an AI mention. My guide to SEO for AI search covers the full approach.

Practical steps to show up in AI answers

Write question-and-answer sections that mirror what clients actually ask. Answer each question in the first two sentences, then expand. Add FAQ and organisation schema so the structure is machine-readable. Keep your name, address, and services consistent across the web.

And decide your crawler policy deliberately: if you block AI bots entirely, you are choosing not to appear. My guide on whether to block AI bots explains the trade-off and how to allow the right ones.

Frequently asked questions

Can you pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Not for organic mentions. There is no equivalent of Google Ads for AI answers, which is exactly why showing up there is valuable: it reads as a recommendation, not an advert.

How do I check whether my site appears?

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI the questions your clients would ask, including your location. Then watch your analytics for referral traffic from those tools. It is small today but growing steadily.

Does AI search replace normal SEO?

No. AI tools lean on the same signals search engines use, so strong SEO is the foundation. Think of AI visibility as a second return on the same work.

Is it worth ranking highly on ChatGPT?

In March 2024, ChatGPT received 1.8 billion visitors, an average of 60 million visitors per day. This is not a niche market where you’ve got access to a few thousand people, ChatGPT is rising in popularity and regular uses. Getting ahead of the curve and increasing your ranking on ChatGPT is now one of the most forefront ways of marketing your business digitally.

However, ChatGPT’s index is not updated in real-time, meaning that a lot of it’s responses can be not on target at the moment, and it can take a while for changes to be visible through their search.

Your ranking on ChatGPT and other AI is likely to increasingly have an impact on your business as a sales funnel. Like all marketing techniques it will require time and effort to do right but this is one where you can get ahead of the game and start early.
